For the first levels you will be accompanied by a fairy helper, who will give you hints about the basics in this game. You can also talk to her to get a few questions answered.

Take a Quest
Your quest guide will tell you about others in the village needing your assistance. Your next task is to find this person in the village and talk with them. This will allow you to accept a quest. You can monitor your quests with the active quest window by hitting ctrl-Q.
Performing a Quest
Your first quest usually asks you to defeat some nearby creatures. This teaches you about attacking and looting. You might even learn about being defeated too. If you are defeated, then you'll be given the option to teleport to the closest respawn point. Each village has a respawn point. Being defeated has no penalty other than having to run back. You won't lose experience, items, or gold.
To help you find the way to your task at hand you will be presented with a waypointer that shows the direction and how far it is. This place is also represented with a marker on the world map.
Making Gold
Most creatures in Secondhand Lands don't carry gold. In order to earn gold, you need to take the items you loot from defeated creatures and sell it to a merchant. You can even put looted item on the market for more gold. Merchants will give you your gold immediately. The market is slower and may not result in another player buying your wares.
Communicating
Chatting with other players is another part of this game, and friends can proove to be necessary in certain situations, to do this there are a few different commands depending on who or how many you want to address with your speech.
- /w (/worldsay) addresses all the players in this server.
- /f (/factionsay) addresses all the players in same faction as you.
- /gu (/guildsay) addresses all the players in your guild.
- /g (/groupsay) addresses all the members of your group.
- /t <playername> (/tell <playername>) allows you to speak to a certain player.
- <no command> addresses all the players within earshot.
- /h (/helpsay) addresses everyone and indicates that you want help with questions about the game. Other players will help you at their best.
Different speech will be shown in different color, which you can change to your own liking. You can also set up different logs for different speech, and then you don't have to use the commands above to make your writing end up at the correct place. This is done in the Options window, in the logs tab.
Also remember that you can indeed choose to not subscribe to a channel. For example, if you are not interested in helping people, you can choose to exclude the messages on Help channel, or any other channel you are not interested in.
